For a finite \(p\)-local spectrum \(X\), a \(v_n\)-self map is a map \(f\colon\Sigma^t X \to X\) which gives an isomorphism in \(K(n)\)-homology, where \(K(n)\) is the Morava \(K\)-theory spectrum with \(K(n)_* = \mathbb{F}_p[v_n^{\pm 1}]\). Since \(K(n)_*\) is a graded field, \(K(n)_*f\) is given by multiplication by an element of \(K(n)_*\), and a \(v_n\)-self map is said to have periodicity \(k\) if \(K(n)_*f\) is given by multiplication by \(v_n^k\). Behrens-Hill-Hopkins-Mahowald [\textit{M. Behrens} et al., Homology Homotopy Appl. 10, No. 3, 45--84 (2008; Zbl 1162.55010)] showed that the generalized Moore spectrum \(M_2(1,4)\) has a \(v_2\)-self map of periodicity 32, and it is natural to ask if there exists a finite \(2\)-local spectrum with periodicity less than 32. The main theorem of this paper gives a class of finite \(2\)-local spectra which have \(v_2\)-self maps of periodicity \(1\). This class of spectra is given by the class of finite spectra whose cohomology is isomorphic to a certain \(A(n)\)-algebra where \(A(n)\) denotes the subalgebra of the Steenrod algebra generated by \(\mathrm{Sq}^{2^i}\) for \(1 \leq i \leq n\).
