Let \(L\) be a finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero and \(D\) a derivation on \(L\). If \(D\) is a non-singular linear operator on \(L\), then the Lie algebra \(L\) is nilpotent by the known result of Jacobson. This theorem fails if \(L\) is over a field of positive characteristic, there are simple Lie algebras with a non-singular derivation. The authors point out a class of solvable modular Lie algebras for which the Jacobson's Theorem remains true: it consists of algebras whose quotients of derived series are of dimension less than \(p\). The structure of finite-dimensional solvable but not nilpotent Lie algebras with abelian derived subalgebra of codimension 1 that admit a non-singular derivation was studied. An example of solvable, but not nilpotent, Lie algebra of derived length 3 with non-singular derivations was constructed; it is a semidirect sum of an abelian Lie algebra \(I\) of dimension 2p (over a field \(F\) of characteristic \(p\) with \(|F|\geq p^2\)) and a Lie algebra \(K\) of maximal class with \(\dim K=p+1\). An another example of a Lie algebra of the same type was constructed using representations of the three-dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra on a vector space of dimension \(p+3\) over a field of characteristic \(p>0.\)
