The main result of this paper is the following. For any complex polynomial \(P\) of degree \(n\geq 2\) and any point \(z,\) there exists a critical point \(\zeta\) of this polynomial (i.e., \(P'(\zeta)=0)\) such that \[ \left|\frac{P(z)-P(\zeta)}{z-\zeta}\right| \geq \frac{1}{n}\tan \frac{\pi}{4n}\left| P'(z) \right| . \] This inequality is related to an inequality and conjecture of \textit{S. Smale} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 4, 1--36 (1981; Zbl 0456.12012)] and the dual main-value conjecture.
