On presentations for unitary groups (Q2282984)

The authors find short (in the sense of total length of relators) 2-generator presentations for unitary groups \(U_3(q)\) for \(q\le 11\). This is done using methods introduced in earlier work of the authors, e.g. [Exp. Math. 16, No. 3, 347--358 (2007; Zbl 1133.20015); Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 387, 183--197 (2011; Zbl 1243.20062)], in particular enumeration of relators, sampling of geenrating sets and the standard toolset for finitely presented groups. They are able to establish efficiency for some, but not all the groups considered.
