A Bott tower \(\{M_j;\;0\leq j\leq m\}\) is a sequence of \(\mathbb{C} P^1\)-bundles \(\mathbb{C} P^1\hookrightarrow M_j \rightarrow M_{j-1}\) such that \(M_j\) is the projectivisation of a sum of two complex line bundles over \(M_{j-1}\). A flag manifold is a homogeneous space \(G/P\) where \(G\) is a complex Lie group and \(P\subset G\) a parabolic subgroup. The members of both of these families of manifolds admit nice torus actions. In the paper under review, a family of manifolds is introduced which generalizes both of the above families. The authors call the members of this more general family flag Bott manifolds of general Lie type. It is shown that they admit nice torus actions. Moreover, their torus-equivariant and non-equivariant cohomology is computed. As an intermediate result it is shown that they are diffeomorphic to certain biquotients. The constructions in the paper are illustrated with several examples.
