For a positive superharmonic function \(\omega\) on \(\mathbb D\), the weighted Dirichlet space \(\mathcal{D}_\omega\) is the set of holomorphic functions on \(\mathbb D\) with \[\mathcal{D}_\omega (f)=\int_\mathbb{D}|f'(z)|^2\omega(z)dA(z)<\infty,\] where \(dA\) is the normalized area measure on \(\mathbb D\). The Hadamard product of two power series is obtained by multiplying them coefficientwise. A Hadamard multiplier of \(\mathcal{D}_\omega\) is a function \(h\) with the property that the Hadamard product of \(h\) and any \(f\in\mathcal{D}_\omega\) belongs to \(\mathcal{D}_\omega\). In this paper an optimal estimate for \(\mathcal{D}_\omega(h\ast f)\), where \(h\ast f\) is the Hadamard product of \(h\) and \(f\), is obtained in terms of \(\mathcal{D}_\omega (f)\) and the Taylor coefficients of \(h\). The main result of the paper (Theorem 1.1) gives an equivalent condition for a function \(h\) to be a Hadamard multiplier of \(\mathcal{D}_\omega\) for every superharmonic weight \(\omega\), and a sharp estimate of the corresponding norm is obtained. For applications of the main theorem, some criteria for the boundedness of a matrix \(T_h\) attached to \(h\), as well as quantitative estimates for its norm are obtained in Theorem 1.2. Besides other applications of the results, an application to radial dilations is given which is used to obtain a new proof of the fact that the polynomials are dense in \(\mathcal{D}_\omega\). The paper ends with some concluding remarks and interesting questions about this problem.
