The purpose of this article is to study the uniqueness, existence, regularity and boundary behavior of the hyperbolic Ernst equation, or Goursat problem. The main tool is the introduction of a two-sheeted compact Riemann surface with genus zero. First, some notation is introduced and the four main results are stated. The special case in which the colliding waves have collinear polarization, with strictly positive Ernst potential, is analyzed. Then, Lax pair and eigenfunctions are introduced to prepare for the proofs. These proofs use Cauchy integrals and Riemann-Hilbert problem. Some extra proofs are made in an appendix.
