The authors consider the periodic boundary problem for a class of one dimensional compressible systems with degenerate diffusion coefficients, which includes some typical fluid models. A blowup criterion is presented for this system with a wide range of constitutive pressure and viscosity, and a local and global existence results are given under some suitable assumptions on constitutive pressure and viscosity.
