If two Dehn surgery operations, using slopes \(r\) and \(r'\), resp., on a knot \(K\) in the \(3\)-sphere result in homeomorphic oriented \(3\)-manifolds then these operations are called purely cosmetic. The main theorem states that, to any two distinct slopes on a knot \(K\), belong two Dehn surgeries which are not purely cosmetic if \(V''_K(1)\) or \(V'''_K(1)\) is non-zero, where \(V_K\) is the Jones polynomial of \(K\). This improves on known results and excludes the possibility of cosmetic surgery for all knots up to \(11\) crossings with \(8\) exceptions. Other applications deal with two-bridge knots and Whitehead doubles.
