The author is reviewing the results on existence (or nonexistence) of constant mean curvature spacelike hypersurfaces in the cosmological setting, and discusses the connection to the space-time splitting problem. The author is accentuating the contribution by \textit{R. Bartnik} [Commun. Math. Phys. 117, No. 4, 615--624 (1988; Zbl 0647.53044)] to the solving of the problem. To the knowledge of the reviewer there are no papers by Robert Bartnik published after 2010, while the biographic sources are very scarce.
