The authors construct local-in-time weak solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes system. They require that initial data are locally square integrable but, unlike the recent results, they do not assume uniform \(L^2\) bounds. Their solutions are suitable in the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg sense, i.e. they satisfy the local energy inequality. These solutions make sense in several critical spaces for 3D NSE such as the Lebesgue space \(L^3\), the Lorenz space \(L^{3,\infty}\), as well as the Morrey space \(M^{2,1}\) over \(\mathbb R^3\).
