The paper is devoted to the numerical integration of \[ u_t=\mathbf{L}u+\mathbf{N}(u,t),\quad u(x,t_0)=u_0(x), \] where \(x \in \mathbb{R}^d\) and \(\mathbf{L}\) and \(\mathbf{N}\) are the discretized (with respect to space) linear and nonlinear operators, respectively (coming from the discretization of the Schödinger equation with real potential for example). In particular, the author is interested, for the implementation of an exponential time differencing scheme, in an efficient approximation of the product \(\varphi_\mu(h\mathbf{L})v\) where \[ \varphi_0(z)=e^z, \quad \varphi_\mu(z)=\dfrac{1}{z^\mu}\left(e^z-\sum_{k=0}^{\mu-1} z^k/k!\right), \quad \mu=1, 2, \dots,\tag{1} \] with \(h\) the time step. In the paper, the author develops a Chebyshev series approximation for (1) on an imaginary segment, shows that such a segment can contain the spectrum of a Schrödinger equation with a real potential, derives the coefficients of the Chebyshev series and gives a recursive procedure for their computation.
