A decoupled, linear and unconditionally energy stable scheme is developed for solving the incompressible nonlinear magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) equations. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by the first-order projection method and the magnetic field is decoupled from velocity by introducing an auxiliary intermediate velocity variable. The unconditional energy stability for the fully discrete scheme and the associated energy dissipation law are proved with the finite element approximations and the optimal error estimates are derived. Implementation on some benchmark numerical experiments like Kelvin-Helmholtz shear instability and the magnetic-frozen phenomenon in the lid-driven cavity demonstrate the stability, efficiency, and accuracy of the scheme.
