In this outstanding paper, the author proves the following theorem: For a complete abelian topological group \(G\) the following statements are equivalent: 1) There exists a natural number \(n\ge 1\) such that the closure of the subgroup \(nG\) is compact. 2) For every injective homomorphism \(f:G\to H\) (\(H\) a topological group) the quotient group \(\overline{f(G)}/f(G)\) is a torsion group. A corollary of this result is the famous Prodanov-Stoyanov theorem which states that every abelian minimal topological group is precompact. Another consequence is that an abelian group \(G\) is compact if and only if it is complete in each weaker Hausdorff group topology.
