The authors develop an idea of Cecotti and Vafa dating from 1993 how to associate $n$ real spectral numbers $\alpha _j$ to a real upper triangular $n\times n$-matrix $S$ with units on the diagonal and eigenvalues of $S^{-1}S^t$ on the unit circle; the latter equal $\exp (-2\pi i\alpha _j)$. The authors are interested in cases when spectral numbers fit well to natural (split) polarized mixed Hodge structures, in cases of Stokes like matrices which are associated to holomorphic functions with isolated singularities (Landau-Ginzburg models) and in cases of chain type singularities.
