Let $P$ be a topological property. A space $X$ is said to be star $P$ if for any open cover $\mathcal{U}$ of $X$ there exists a subspace $A \subseteq X$ with property $P$ such that $X = st(A, \mathcal{U}) \medspace \lbrack = \bigcup \lbrace U \in \mathcal{U}:U \cap A \ne \emptyset \rbrace \rbrack$. Then the set $A$ is called a star kernel of $\mathcal{U}$. Star covering properties have been studied by many authors. In [Topology Appl. 169, 87--98 (2014; Zbl 1376.54025)], \textit{S. G. Popvassilev} and \textit{J. E. Porter} introduced a monotone version of star covering properties. In this paper the authors present six examples involving relationships between monotonically star $\sigma$-compact spaces and related spaces, and prove four theorems on topological properties of monotonically star $\sigma$-compact spaces.
