This contribution focuses on the roots of the 1891 controversy between Leopold Kronecker and Émile Picard regarding the attribution of the formula giving the number of solutions of certain systems of several equations. The paper shows in great detail how and why Picard modifies the objects created by Kronecker, thereby offering a solution with ontological implications different from Kronecker's.
