    In many papers, the presumed answer to the Brill-Noether problem is given by a simple-minded dimension count. The present author studies about the upper bound for Brill-Noether schemes of rank \(2\) vector bundles. The main tools used in the paper are results obtained by \textit{M. F. Atiyah} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 7, 414--452 (1957; Zbl 0084.17305)] and an unpublished result of \textit{B. Feinberg} [``On the dimension and irreducibility of Brill-Noether loci'']. Let \(B_{n,d}^k = \{ E \mid E \text{ is a stable vector bundle of rank }n \text{ and degree }d, h^0(E) \geq k\}\). The main result in the paper is that if \(3 \leq d \leq 2g - 2, 2 \leq k \leq 2 + \frac{d}{2}\), then \(\dim B_{2,d}^k \leq 2(g-1) + d -2k + 1\). Moreover, if \(B_{2, K}^k = \{ E \in B_{2, 2g-2}^k \mid \det E \text{ is the canonical line bundle}\}\) and \(2 \leq k \leq g+1\), then any irreducible component of \(B_{2,K}^k\) has dimension \(\leq 3g -2k -2\). As applications, the author proves anew a Mumford's Theorem for rank \(2\) bundles and obtains that \textit{the scheme \(B_{2,K}^2\) is reduced and irreducible of dimension \(3g - 6\)}.
