The authors consider weighted composition operators \(W_{\psi,\phi} f= \psi (f\circ \phi)\) where \(\psi:\mathbb B_n\to \mathbb C\) and \(\phi:\mathbb B_n\to\mathbb B_n\) are holomorphic in the unit ball of \(\mathbb C^n\). They study their boundedness, compactness and describe the essential norm as operators from \(X\), a Banach space of holomorphic functions in the unit ball \(\mathbb B_n\) where the point-evaluation functionals are bounded, into a weighted type Banach space \(H^\infty_\mu(\mathbb B_n)\) of holomorphic functions with \(\sup_{z\in \mathbb B_n} \mu(z)|f(z)|<\infty\) where \(\mu\) denotes a positive continuous weight define on \(\mathbb B_n\). Results for the case \(n=1\) had been previously proved by the second author and \textit{M. Tjani} in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 434, No. 1, 93--124 (2016; Zbl 1338.30049)]. In this setting, boundedness is characterized by the condition \[\sup_{z\in \mathbb B_n}\mu(z)|\psi(z)|\,|K(\phi(z))|<\infty,\] where \(K(z)=\sup\{ |f(z)|: \|f\|_X\le 1\}\) for a general Banach function space \(X\), while compactness is described by \[\lim_{s\to 1}\sup_{|\phi(z)|>s}\mu(z)|\psi(z)|\,|K(\phi(z))|=0\] when \(X\) is assumed to satisfy that \(K\) is bounded away from zero on the range of \(\phi\), the unit ball of \(X\) is relatively compact with respect to the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets, and \(\|S_j . f\|_X\le C \|f\|_X\) for any \(f\in X\), \(S\in \mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb B_n)\), and \(S_j\) stands for the \(j\)th component of \(S\). They also study the case where the range is \(H^\infty_{\mu,0}(\mathbb B_n)\) (functions in \(H^\infty_{\mu,0}(\mathbb B_n)\) such that \(\lim_{|z|\to 1}\mu(z)|f(z)|=0\)) and find a formula for the essential norm under a number of assumptions on \(X\). Applications to the particular cases of \(X\) such as Hardy, weighted Bergman and Bloch spaces are provided.
