The author extends the Garsia-Rodemich construction [\textit{A. Garsia} and \textit{E. Rodemich}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 24, No. 2, 67--116 (1974; Zbl 0274.26006)] and the scope of its applications. He first shows that the new space \(B\), introduced by \textit{J. Bourgain} et al. [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 17, No. 9, 2083--2101 (2015; Zbl 1339.46028)] is closely connected to suitable scalings of the Garsia-Rodemich norms. As an application, the author gives a new streamlined approach to the remarkable embedding obtained in [Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu, loc.\,cit.] \[ \mathrm{BMO} \subset B \subset L(n', \infty). \] The Garsia-Rodemich spaces are particularly well suited to study other important inequalities in analysis, including Poincaré-Sobolev embeddings. In addition, the author introduces Gagliardo seminorms adapted to rearrangement-invariant spaces and uses his generalized Garsia-Rodemich construction to prove fractional Sobolev inequalities in this context.
