The author explores factor maps on shifts of finite type and asks when such maps will preserve a Gibbs measure. More specifically, he gives various conditions which ensure that the factor map does {not} preserve the Gibbs property of the measure. These conditions involve properties of the fiber over a point in the factor space, which are briefly defined in the first sections of the paper.
