The authors consider the one-dimensional boundary value problem (BVP) \begin{align*} -\varphi(u')'=\lambda h(t)f(u), \ t \in (0,1),\\ u(0)=u(1)=0, \tag{1}\end{align*} where \(\varphi\) is an odd increasing homeomorphism, \(\lambda\) is a positive real parameter, \(f\) is continuous and \(h\) is allowed to be singular at the endpoints of the interval \([0,1]\). Depending on the values of the parameter of \(\lambda\), the authors show that the BVP (1) has no positive solutions, one positive solution or two positive solutions. The existence results rely on the Krasnosel'skiĭ-Guo and the Schauder fixed point theorems. Two examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.
