The paper's main theme is a classical Cheng-Yau gradient estimate for positive harmonic functions in the setting of complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds with bounded geometric conditions. The operator considered is a sub-Laplacian, therefore standard Riemannian techniques are not applicable. The results include an estimate of the greatest lower bound for the \(L^{2}\)-spectrum of the sub-Laplacian. As a typical application of the Cheng-Yau estimate, the author proves the Liouville theorem of positive pseudo-harmonic functions on complete noncompact Sasakian manifolds with nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature.
