In the theory of metric spaces, the notion of ``metric betweenness'' was introduced by \textit{K. Menger} [Math. Ann. 100, 75--163 (1928; JFM 54.0622.02)] in the following form. Let \((X, d)\) be a metric space and let \(x\), \(y\) and \(z\) be different points of \(X\). One says that \(y\) lies between \(x\) and \(z\) if \[ d(x, z) = d(x, y) + d(y, z). \] The author says that points \(x\), \(y\), \(z \in X\) are rectilinearly placed if one of these points lies between the other two points. The author defines also a notion of flatly placed points and studies the interplay between rectilinearly placed points and flatly placed ones.
