Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic zero. In the paper under review the authors search for square-free polynomials \(f\in k[X]\) of degree \(3\) such that the continued fraction expansion of \(\sqrt{f(X)}\in k((X))\) is periodic. As the authors point out the continued fraction expansions of \(\sqrt{f(X)}\) is periodic if and only if the continued fraction expansions of \(\sqrt{a^2f(bX)}\) is periodic. Under this equivalence the authors find in the case that \(k=\mathbb Q\) three such polynomials \(f_1,f_2,f_3\) other than \(cX^3+1\) and conjecture that these are the only polynomials \(f(X)\) such that the continue fraction expansion of \(\sqrt{f(X)}\) is periodic.
