The authors first show that a mapping $T:X\to X$ of a bounded complete metric space $(X,d)$ has a unique fixed point provided that $\inf_{x\ne y\in X}\{d(x,y)-d(Tx,Ty)\}>0$. The same is true when $T$ is E-weakly contractive, i.e., if $d(Tx,Ty)\le d(x,y)-\phi(d(x,y))$ for all $x,y\in X$, where $\phi:[0,+\infty)\to[0,+\infty)$ is a function satisfying $\phi(0)=0$ and $\inf_{t>0}\phi(t)>0$. Some appropriate examples are given.
