In this paper, the authors study number theoretic and topological properties of a family of links called pretzel fully augmented links. Such links often admit hyperbolic structures that can be described by combinatorial information from their link diagrams. The authors determine exactly when such link complements are arithmetic (that is, if their fundamental group is commensurable to \(\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathcal{O}_k)\), where \(k\) is some imaginary quadratic extension of \(\mathbb{Q}\) and \(\mathcal{O}_k\) its ring of integers), and exactly when such link complements are commensurable with one another (that is, when they share a common finite-sheeted cover). They prove that these link complements realize infinitely many imaginary quadratic extensions of totally real number fields as invariant trace fields, and they explicitly compute these fields. Furthermore, they construct two infinite families of non-arithmetic fully augmented link complements: one that has no hidden symmetries whereas for the other, the number of hidden symmetries grows linearly with volume. The second family realizes the maximal growth rate for the number of hidden symmetries relative to volume for non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds. At the same time, the authors make an analysis of the geometry of link complements they consider, including their cusp shapes and totally geodesic surfaces inside of these manifolds.
