Let \({\mathcal B}(H)\) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space \(H\), and let \(T=V|T|\) be the canonical polar decomposition of an operator \(T\in {\mathcal B}(H)\). In this well written paper, the author gives several explicit formulas representing the polar factor \(V\). Among them, he shows that, if \(T\) has a closed range, then \[\|A(t)-V\|\leq \exp\left(-t\gamma(T)^2\right)\] for all \(t\geq0\), where \(A(t)=\int_0^tT\exp(-sT^*T)|T| ds\) and \(\gamma(T)\) is the reduced minimum modulus of \(T\). This implies that \(V=\int_0^\infty T\exp(-sT^*T)|T| ds\) with convergence in the norm topology of \({\mathcal B}(H)\). He also proves that \begin{align*} V & =\sum\limits_{k=0}^\infty\frac{T}{k+1}\prod\limits_{j=0}^{k-1}\left(I-\frac{T^*T}{j+1}\right)|T|\\ & =\sum\limits_{k=0}^\infty\frac{1}{k+1}\prod\limits_{j=0}^{k-1}\left(I-\frac{TT^*}{j+1}\right)|T^*|T\\ & =\sum\limits_{k=0}^\infty\left[2(1+k)I-TT^*\right]\frac{T}{(1+k)^2}\prod\limits_{j=0}^{k-1}\left(I-\frac{T^*T}{j+1}\right)|T| \end{align*} where the convergence is in the strong topology of \({\mathcal B}(H)\). The proof of these results uses several intermediate lemmas and results established by the author himself. Furthermore, he obtains a number of corollaries and results about the approximation of the polar factor \(V\) by Hermite interpolation polynomials and by partial isometries.
