For a Banach algebra $A$ with unit $e_A$, fix two idempotents $p, q\in A$ and $\epsilon>0$. The authors define the $(p, q)$-$\epsilon$ pseudospectrum of an element $a\in A$ as the set of all complex numbers $\lambda$ such that $a-\lambda e_A$ does not have $(p, q)$ outer generalized inverse with norm smaller than $\epsilon$. The set of all complex numbers $\lambda$ for which $a-\lambda e_A$ has a $(p, q)$ outer generalized inverse with norm $\epsilon$ is called a level set of the $(p, q)$-$\epsilon$ pseudospectrum of $a$. Similarily, the $(p, q)$-resolvent set of $a\in A$ is defined as the set of all complex numbers $\lambda$ for which the $(p, q)$ outer generalized inverse of $a-\lambda e_A$ exists. The properties of the $(p, q)$-resolvent set and $(p, q)$-$\epsilon$ pseudospectrum of an element $a\in A$ are studied and discussed in the present paper. The main questions discussed are the non-emptiness of the interior of the pseudospectrum, the compactness of the pseudospectrum, and the finiteness of the components of the pseudospectrum.
