This article continues the research of the authors in [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 34, No. 1, 397--412 (2018; Zbl 1441.47033); J. Funct. Anal. 274, No. 12, 3503--3530 (2018; Zbl 1441.47031)] about composition operators \(C_{\varphi}\) acting on the Schwartz space \(S(\mathbb{R})\) of rapidly decreasing functions of one variable. The first cited article [Zbl 1441.47033] characterized the smooth functions \(\varphi\) which are a symbol, that is, \(C_{\varphi}\) maps (continuously) \(S(\mathbb{R})\) into itself. In particular, it was shown that every polynomial \(\varphi\) is a symbol. The aim of the present paper is to investigate thoroughly the spectrum of \(C_{\varphi}\) on \(S(\mathbb{R})\) for polynomials \(\varphi\). If the operator \(C_{\varphi}\) is mean ergodic, then its spectrum reduces to \(\{0\}\), while the spectrum of any non mean ergodic composition operator with a polynomial always contains the closed unit disc except perhaps the origin. Section 3 presents a complete description of the spectrum of \(C_{\varphi}\) for quadratic polynomials \(\varphi\) depending on the number of fixed points of the polynomial. The spectrum of \(C_{\varphi}\) for cubic polynomials \(\varphi\) is investigated in Section~4. A~complete description is obtained when the leading coefficient of \(\varphi\) is positive. Partial non-trivial results are given in the case of negative leading coefficient. The last section includes several results about the spectrum of \(C_{\varphi}\) when \(\varphi\) is a strictly monotone symbol, which need not be a polynomial.
