The author introduces the concept of ergodicity of states with respect to some group of transformations on a von Neumann algebra, and its properties are studied. Let \(\mathcal{M}\) be a von Neumann algebra, \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) be normal states on \(\mathcal{M}\). The states \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) are said to be equivalent if \(\varphi(x^*x)=0 \Leftrightarrow \psi(x^*x)=0\) for all~$x$, denoted by \(\varphi\sim \psi\). The states \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) are said to be singular if there is an operator \(x\in \mathcal{M}\) such that \(\varphi(x^*x)=0\) and \(\psi(1-x^*x)=0\), denoted by \(\varphi \perp \psi\). The author provides necessary and sufficient conditions for states \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) to be equivalent or singular.
