Let us consider a 2-cell decomposition of an orientable (not necessarily compact) surface. That decomposition is called \(Z\)-orientable if its faces can be labelled with two labels such that adjacent faces have different label. Let \(S\) be a connected Riemann surface not necessarily compact and let \(\varphi : S\rightarrow \widehat{\mathbb{C}}\) be a surjective meromorphic map where \(\widehat{\mathbb{C}}\) denotes the Riemann sphere. In the paper under review, a necessary and sufficient geometrical condition is provided for the existence of a meromorphic map \(\psi : S \rightarrow \widehat{\mathbb{C}}\) such that \(\varphi = \psi^2\). The condition is established in terms of the \(Z\)-orientability of a particular 2-cell decomposition of \(S\). Next, the authors extend the notion of \(Z\)-orientability to Kleinian groups, and study whether Fibonacci manifolds, reflection Groups and co-compact Fuchsian groups, satisfy the \(Z\)-orientability or not. Conditions are given in the affirmative cases.
