Consider a finite population of \(N\) labeled units. Let \(y\) be a study variable taking values \(Y_i\) and \(x\) an auxiliary variable with values \(X_i\) (completely known) on the \(i\)th unit, \(i=1,2,\dots,N\). Assume a super-population model \(\xi\) for inferences based on a complex survey for this population. Inference can be drawn by using a `design-based' method utilizing sample observations and sample design to estimate the finite population parameters or `model-based' approach to estimate the super population parameters ignoring the sample design.
