      The Whitehead-Conjecture states that subcomplexes of aspherical 2-complexes are themselves aspherical. This conjecture is still open. The authors discuss this question in connection with other open problems like the Kervaire-Laudenbach conjecture and the Bass trace conjecture. They concentrate on new developments coming in from \(L^2\)-cohomology and from the Cockcroft Condition. Several new conjectures are formulated and some new results in this area presented.
