In this paper the authors deal with associative algebras, pairs or triple systems \(R\) with involution \(*\). They show that if \(R\) is \(*\)-simple then \(R\) is either generated by all traces (elements of the form \(x+x^*\)) or it is a composition algebra (in case \(R\) is an algebra), or its symmetric elements satisfy a Clifford homotope PI (in case \(R\) is a pair or a triple system). They also show that the associative pairs can be replaced by the associative subpair generated by nonzero ample subspaces when referring to regularity conditions (*-primeness, *-simplicity and *-primitivity) and when dealing with the Baer, properly nilpotent, locally nilpotent or Jacboson radicals. The paper finishes with an explicit description of ample subspaces for *-simple associative systems.
