Structure preserving approximation of dissipative evolution problems (Q2315194)

In this work a general framework for the formulation and the discretization of evolution problems governed by an energy identity is proposed. The author rewrites the problem in canonical form, thus stressing the underlying energy dissipation structure. A systematic numerical approximation is achieved by using Galerkin methods. The proposed framework works well with a wide range of applications: nonlinear electromagnetism, gas dynamics and dissipative Hamiltonian systems.
