Two-dimensional variable coefficient acoustic wave equation in Hamiltonian form is discretized in space by a fourth-order compact finite difference operator. The resulting canonical Hamiltonian system of ordinary differential equations are integrated in time by second and fourth-order energy (Hamiltonian) preserving average vector field (AVF) methods. The full discrete second-order AVF method with the compact finite difference scheme preserves the energy with an order of convergence \(\mathcal{O}( \Delta t^2 + \Delta x^4 + \Delta y^4)\), and fourth-order AVF method with order of convergence \(\mathcal{O}( \Delta t^4 + \Delta x^4 + \Delta y^4)\). Numerical tests on traveling waves with constant and variable coefficients, and the acoustic wave equation in the layered medium, confirm the theoretical convergence rates both in time and space and satisfy energy conservation with high accuracy.
