The question of limit linear series for curves not of compact type was studied by \textit{E. Esteves} and \textit{N. Medeiros} [Invent. Math. 149, No. 2, 267--338 (2002; Zbl 1046.14012)]. In the present paper the author gives a different notion of limit linear series for curves not of compact type [\textit{B. Osserman}, ``Limit linear series moduli stacks in higher rank'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1405.2937}]. He then shows that his definition is a generalization of the Eisenbud-Harris definition, see [\textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{J. Harris}, Invent. Math. 74, 371--418 (1983; Zbl 0527.14022); ibid. 90, 359--387 (1987; Zbl 0631.14023)]. His definition replaces the notion of vanishing sequences with inequalities on multivanishing sequences. Furthermore, the author proves that when the moduli space of limit linear series has the expected dimension then every limit linear series may be smoothed to nearby curves [\textit{B. Osserman}, Math. Z. 284, No. 1--2, 69--93 (2016; Zbl 1378.14032)]. his approach uses the notion of linked determinental loci as in [\textit{J. Murray} and \textit{B. Osserman}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 144, No. 6, 2399--2410 (2016; Zbl 1343.14009)].
