Combining the operators \(U_{n}^{\rho}\) defined by \textit{R. Păltănea} [Ann. Tiberiu Popoviciu Semin. Funct. Equ. Approx. Convexity 5, 109--117 (2007; Zbl 1158.41309)] and \(B_{n,\lambda}\) defined by \textit{Q. B. Cai} et al., [``Approximation properties of \(\lambda\)-Bernstein operators'', J. Inequal. Appl. 12, 1--11 (2018)], the authors introduce new \(\lambda\)-Bernstein type operators denoted by \(U_{n,\lambda}^{\rho},\) where \(\rho > 0\) and \(\lambda \in [-1,1].\) Some approximation properties of \(U_{n,\lambda}^{\rho}\) are studied, including the uniform convergence of \(U_{n,\lambda}^{\rho}f\) to \(f\) on \([0,1],\) the error estimation in terms of different kind of modulus of smoothness (as moduli of continuity, second order modulus of smoothness, first order respectiv second order Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness, and a second order Păltănea modulus of smoothness), and Voronovskaja type asymptotic formulas (classical Voronovskaja type result and Grüss-Voronovskaja type results). Finally, some numerical examples are given to illustrate the convergence of the operators \(U_{n,\lambda}^{\rho}.\)
