Denote by \(\mathbb{G}\) the class of all continuous, bounded, non-identically null, even functions \(\varphi:\mathbb{R}\to [0,\infty)\). Consider the space \(L_2(\mathbb{R})\) with the norm denoted by \(\|f\|\), \(f\in L_2(\mathbb{R})\), and the space \(L^\alpha_2(\mathbb{R})\) defined via the fractional derivatives \(\mathcal{D}^\alpha f\) of order \(\alpha\in(0,\infty)\) of functions \(f\in L_2(\mathbb{R})\). For \(w:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{C}\) such that \(|w|^2\in\mathbb{G}, \, f\in L_2(\mathbb{R})\) and \(h>0\) define the generalized difference operator by \(\Delta^w_h(f,x)=\frac1{\sqrt{2\pi}}\,\frac{d}{dx}\int_\mathbb{R}\mathcal{F}(f,\tau)\frac{e^{i\tau x}-1}{i\tau}\, d\tau\,,\) where \(\mathcal{F}\) denotes the Fourier transform operator on \(L_2(\mathbb{R})\). Let also \(\omega^w(f,t)=\sup\{\|\Delta^w_h\| : |h|\le t\},\, t\ge 0,\) be the generalized modulus of smoothness corresponding to \(w\). Using this generalized modulus of smoothness the author studies the approximation of functions in the spaces \(L_2(\mathbb{R})\) and \(L^\alpha_2(\mathbb{R})\) by entire functions of exponential type and obtains exact Jackson-type inequalities for \(\omega^w.\)
