The authors develop a geometric approach to study long wave limits for Schrödinger map systems into manifolds with a confining potential on a submanifold. This general theory is illustrated by the analysis of the long wave limits of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation when Korteweg-de Vries vector equations arise. Also Landau-Lifshitz systems for chains (ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic) are studied.
