\textit{D. Gay} and \textit{R. Kirby} [Geom. Topol. 20, No. 6, 3097--3132 (2016; Zbl 1372.57033)] proved that every smooth, closed, oriented, connected \(4\)-manifold admits a trisection. This is the \(4\)-dimensional analog of a Heegaard splitting of a \(3\)-manifold. Such a trisection can be described by a trisection diagram. The authors develop a technique to glue relative trisection diagrams for compact manifolds with the same non-empty, connected boundary to obtain a trisection diagram for the corresponding closed \(4\)-manifold. As an application, explicit trisection diagrams for a large class of \(4\)-manifolds can be obtained. In particular, the authors obtain trisection diagrams for two homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic \(4\)-manifolds: the Horikawa surface \(H'(1)\) and \(5\mathbb{CP}^2\#29\overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}\). Furthermore, the authors also use their technique to obtain an alternative proof of the above mentioned theorem, that every smooth, closed, oriented, connected \(4\)-manifold admits a trisection.
