The authors are interested to the smooth equivariant compactifications of the complex vector group \(\mathbb{G}^n_a\), i.e. of \(\mathbb{C}^n\) equipped with the additive group structure. In [\textit{B. Hassett} and \textit{Y. Tschinkel}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 1999, No. 22, 1211--1230 (1999; Zbl 0966.14033)] are classified the smooth equivariant compactifications of \(\mathbb{G}^n_a\) with dimension 3 and Picard number 1. [\textit{Z. Huang} and \textit{P. Montero}, Mich. Math. J. 69, No. 2, 341--368 (2020; Zbl 1455.14071)] contains a full classification of Fano 3-folds which are smooth equivariant compactifications of \(\mathbb{G}^n_a\). In [\textit{T. Fujita}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 36, 75--89 (1984; Zbl 0541.14036)], the first author and J.-M. Hwang introduced the notion of Euler-symmetric projective varieties, namely non-degenerate projective varieties admitting many \(\mathbb{C}^*\)-actions of Euler type. In such work it is shown that they are equivariant compactifications of \(\mathbb{G}^n_a\) and they are classified by certain algebraic data (called symbol systems), while it remains the problem to translate the smoothness in terms of these algebraic data. Recall that the index \(i(X)\) of a Fano manifold \(X\) the greatest integer such that \(-K_X = i(X)H\) for some divisor \(H\) on \(X\). It is well-known that \(i(X) \leq \dim(X)+1\). By a series of works of Fujita, Mella, Mukai and Wiśniewski, the classification of Fano \(n\)-folds with index \(i(X)\geq n-2\) is known. Based on this, the authors a classification of \(n\)-dimensional smooth equivariant compactifications of the complex vector group \(\mathbb{G}^n_a\) with index \(\geq n-2\).
