\textit{A. Granas} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 282, 983--985 (1976; Zbl 0348.47039)] proved that if \(F\) and \(G\) are continuous compact single-valued maps with \(F\cong G\) then \(F\) is essential if and only if \(G\) is essential. In the present paper the author proves the following general topological transversality theorem: Let \(E\) be a completely regular topological space, \(U\) an open subset of \(E\) and \(\cong\) in \(A_{\partial U}(\overline{U},E)\) be an equivalence relation. Suppose \(F\) and \(G\) are two maps in \(A_{\partial U}(\overline{U},E)\) with \(F\cong G\) in \(A_{\partial U}(\overline{U},E)\). Then \(F\) is essential in \(A_{\partial U}(\overline{U},E)\) if and only if \(G\) is essential in \(A_{\partial U}(\overline{U},E)\). Some varieties of this setting are given.
