Let \(X\) be a complete metric space and \({f:X\to X}\) be a continuous map. The authors consider two new equivalence relations for dynamical systems \((X,f)\) named \textit{strong topological shift equivalence} and \textit{topological shift equivalence}. They study the relations between these equivalences and other well-known notions. In particular, it is shown that for homeomorphisms these two notions are equivalent. For surjective dynamical systems it is proved that topological shift equivalence implies topological conjugacy of their canonical homeomorphism extensions, while the converse is not true. For surjective compact dynamical systems it is proved that topological shift equivalence implies the isomorphism of their \(C^*\)-envelopes of the left regular algebras. The authors also show that the mean topological dimension is an invariant of the topological shift equivalence for surjective compact dynamical systems.
