A D-space is one in which for every neighbourhood assignment \(x\mapsto U_x\) one can find a closed and discrete set \(D\) such that \(\{U_x:x\in D\}\) covers the space [\textit{E. K. van Douwen} and \textit{W. F. Pfeffer}, Pac. J. Math. 81, 371--377 (1979; Zbl 0409.54011)]. It was asked by E.~K. van~Douwen whether every regular Lindelöf space is a D-space [\textit{E. Pearl} (ed.), Open problems in topology. II. Amsterdam: Elsevier (2007; Zbl 1158.54300)] and the authors provide a consistent counterexample to a modification of this question. The principal result of this paper is the construction, from~\(\lozenge\), of a zero-dimensional, hereditarily Lindelöf space that is not strongly~D, the latter strengthens the closed-discreteness of the set~\(D\) to: it is locally finite in the topology generated by the family \(\{U_x:x\in X\}\).
