The classical Hausdorff-Young inequality is related to the Fourier transform on \(\mathbb{R}^n\): \[ \|\hat f\|_{p'}\leq C \| f\|_p\quad \Bigl(\tfrac{1}{p}+\tfrac{1}{p'}=1\Bigr), \] where \(\hat f\) is the Fourier transform of \(f\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\). The best constant for this inequality is denoted by \(H_p(\mathbb{R}^n)\). It has been established by Babenko and Beckner that \[ H_p(\mathbb{R}^n)=(B_p)^n, \] where \(B_p\) is the Babenko-Beckner constant, \[ B_p=\frac{p^{1/2p}}{(p')^{1/2p'}}. \] In the present paper, the authors consider generalized Fourier transforms on locally compact groups, abelian or non-abelian. In a number of situations they determine the best constant for the related Hausdorff-Young inequality, or bounds for these best constants. In the case of a non-abelian group \(G\), the Fourier transform involves the unitary representations of \(G\), the Fourier transform \(\hat{f}\) of \(f\in L^p(G)\) is operator-valued, and the definition of the \(L^{p'}\)-norm is a Schatten class norm. At the same time, the paper is a survey of known results on this topic. The authors consider also local Hausdorff-Young inequalities, and non-commutative \(L^p\)-spaces. In the case of a Lie group, the authors establish some relations between Hausdorff-Young inequalities on the group and on its Lie algebra seen as an abelian group. Special studies are made in case of the Fourier transform on compact Lie groups and on the Heisenberg group.
