    A family of \(d\)-variate functions \(\{\psi_{\gamma}\}_{\gamma \in \Gamma} \subset L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\) is called almost-orthogonal if there is a constant \(c>0\) so that for all finite \(\mathcal{F}\subset \Gamma\) and all \(\lambda_{\gamma}\in \mathbb{C}\), \[ \| \sum_{\gamma \in \mathcal{F}} \lambda_{\gamma} \psi_{\gamma}\|_2 \le c\,\big(\sum_{\gamma \in \mathcal{F}} |\lambda_{\gamma}|^2\big)^{1/2}\,. \] Let \(\{\psi_{\gamma}\}_{\gamma \in \Gamma}\) and \(\{\phi_{\gamma}\}_{\gamma \in \Gamma}\) be certain almost-orthogonal families and let \(T:\, L^2(\mathbb{R}^d) \to L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\) be the linear operator defined for \( f\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\) by \[ T(f) = \sum_{\gamma \in \Gamma} \langle f,\,\psi_{\gamma}\rangle \phi_{\gamma}\,. \] Then the author shows that the operator \(T\) can be well-approximated when the families \(\{\psi_{\gamma}\}_{\gamma \in \Gamma}\) and \(\{\phi_{\gamma}\}_{\gamma \in \Gamma}\) are ``discretized'' (replaced by averages over small dyadic cubes), and that these discretizations of \(T\) are stable.
