In this interesting paper the authors consider a multiparticle DLA (diffusion limited aggregation) model, in which a central aggregate grows in an environment of diffusing particles, which stick to the aggregate once they touch it. The main result is that at a high density of particles in the environment the aggregate grows linearly in time. The proof makes use of an auxiliary model of first passage percolation type, the first passage percolation in a hostile environment. The authors also derive various results of interest for this and related models. The hostile environment is seen as composed of holes which can slow down the aggregate growth, but, as is proven, not by too much if the particle density is high enough. Thus the aggregate grows in a qualitatively similar manner to first passage percolation, which is linearly.
