The manuscript under consideration is concerned with the mathematical background and necessary technicalities to deal for instance with the following equation: \[ -\Delta u_{1\epsilon}+u_{1\epsilon} = f_1 \text{ in }\Omega_1^\epsilon \] \[ -\Delta u_{2\epsilon}+u_{2\epsilon} = f_2 \text{ in }\Omega_2^\epsilon \] \[ -\partial_{\nu_{1\epsilon}}u_{1\epsilon} = \epsilon (\Delta_{\Gamma_\epsilon}u_{1\epsilon}+(u_{1\epsilon}-u_{2\epsilon})) \text{ on }\Gamma_\epsilon \] \[ -\partial_{\nu_{2\epsilon}}u_{2\epsilon} = \epsilon (\Delta_{\Gamma_\epsilon}u_{2\epsilon}-(u_{1\epsilon}-u_{2\epsilon})) \text{ on }\Gamma_\epsilon, \] subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on \(\partial\Omega\), where \(\Omega\) is a rectangular domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) consisting of \(\Omega_1^\epsilon\) and \(\Omega_2^\epsilon\) separated by the interface \(\Gamma_\epsilon\). The operator \(\Delta_{\Gamma_\epsilon}\) is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on \(\Gamma_\epsilon\). In order to deal with this problem, the author introduces spaces of weakly differentiable functions with smooth traces. With the help of the notion of two-scale convergence, several compactness statements are provided in order to compute the two-scale limit of the above system. For this to work one needs to assume suitable periodicity statement of \(\Omega_1^\epsilon\) and \(\Omega_2^\epsilon\) and \(\Gamma_\varepsilon\) needs to be sufficiently smooth.
